Agni Missile Series

Agni series
Agni missile series were originally developed under India's Integrated Guided Misile Development program. IGMDP consisted of various SRBM's, MRBM's Anti Tank and MRSAM etc. upon realization of the strategic importance of MRBM program, Agni missile program was decoupled from the IGMDP and given it's own independent allocation for further development.

Agni 1 - Medium Range Ballistic Missile


Range : 700-1250 Km

Status- Operational

Type: Medium Range Ballistic Missile


Agni I forms the backbone of Strategic Forces Command of India with its reach extending to most of the immediate theater of conflict. Agni 1 is road and rail mobile system and is capable of 2200lbs payload of nuclear or conventional warhead. For guidance the missile uses Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation which can be augmented by terminal GPS guidance with radar scene correction. The re-entry vehicle flight dynamics are engineered to give it the ability to correct the trajectory of the launch to account for flight pattern errors and trajectory variances. Solid fueled thrust cartridges are also used for the on-board adaptive controller to trim velocity and spatial orientation.

Agni-II - Medium Range Ballistic Missile


Range :2000 - 3000Km


Status- Operational


Type: Medium Range Ballistic Missile

Agni II is classified as a strategic ballistic missile by the strategic force command of India. It's range and weight places at the cusp of a medium and an Intermediate range ballistic missile. Agni II was developed by India to mitigate the risks posed by rampant proliferation of long range missile technology from North Korea to Pakistan. The onus was to build on proven technology of Agni 1 series. Agni II is a rapid deployment system for the SFC and can be deployed within 15 mins. Agni II still has an active upgrade program in place which saw the Agni II Prime with composite air frame, reduced weight and increased range and Mk2 Re-entry Vehicle optimized of 220KT Nuclear Warhead.

Agni III: Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile


Range: 3500-5000 Km

Status: Testing

Type: Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile

Agni III is an IRBM developed by DRDO and produced by Bharat Dynamics for the Indian Strategic Forces Command. It is currently the longest ranging missile in service with the Indian forces. With Circular error probability of 40 meters, it is one of the most sophisticated and accurate missile in IRBM class. For development of long range sophisticated missile systems, Advanced system Laboratories was established within the DRDO group. ASL was responsible for developing the new solid motor propulsion system for the Agni III. The two stage missile uses indigenous ring laser gyro based inertial navigation. Agni III also provides a higher payload capacity with Mk4 Re-entry vehicle capable of supporting varied munition both conventional and nuclear ranging from 1300lbs to 4000 lbs. 17M stubby height makes Agni III to be highly mobile and suited for naval application. The program spawned the K4 series submarine launched ballistic missile.

Agni IV - Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile

Agni IV is essentially an improved Agni II missile code named Agni II prime. Agni II originally with it's max 3000 Km range was at the cusp of Intermediate range classification, air frame modifications, with weight saving carbon fiber air frame and a composite two stage solid stage motor made Agni II prime close that gap between the Agni III and Agni II. The missile system also featured indigenous laser ring gyroscope and an on-board micro navigation system. The missile also features a highly sophisticated on-board flight control computer with high speed communication for highly accurate CEP and counter ABM maneuvering.

Agni V - Medium Range Ballistic Missile


Range : 5000-5600 Km

Status -Testing and Validation

Type: Medium Range Ballistic Missile.

Agni V is the first Inter Continental Ballistic Missile developed by DRDO with the claimed range of ~5000 Km with a 17.5M height and max payload of 1500 Kgs. This missile's range has been a topic of controversy as chinese reports and some Indian sources indicate the range exceeding 7500 to 8000 km and intentionally downplayed by Indian officials to avoid international criticism. Agni V re-entry vehicle is configured to deliver 2-10 nuclear warheads. The missile was specifically designed to road mobile and rugged. Future iteration of Agni V will be canistered, the length of the missile also points towards a possible SLBM variation.

Agni VI - Inter Continental Ballistic Missile

Range : 8000 to 12000 Km

Agni VI is the follow on to the Agni V ICBM and is under development with the DRDO ADL team. Agni VI will feature carbon fiber composite air frame along with Maneuverable re-entry vehicle capable of supporting upto 10 warheads. Terminal guidance will be similar as the Agni III follow on series with Inertial guidance augmented with radar scene correlation. It will also incorporate dynamic trajectory error correction using liquid thrust cartridges. The system will be a three stage system, and will be longer than the Agni V series. Like most of the modern Indian missile ballistic missiles, Agni VI will be cannistered and road mobile. Like the Agni V , this system will also have a Submarine launched ballistic missile variant dubbed the K6.

S-300 (SA-20 Gargoyle)



The S-300PMU-2 Favorite (Russian С-300ПМУ-2 Фаворит – Favourite, DoD designation SA-20B), introduced in 1997, is an upgrade to the S-300PMU-1 with range extended once again to 195 km (121 mi) with the introduction of the 48N6E2 missile. This system is apparently capable against not just short range ballistic missiles, but now also medium range tactical ballistic missiles. It uses the 83M6E2 command and control system, consisting of the 54K6E2 command post vehicle and the 64N6E2 surveillance/detection radar. It employs the 30N6E2 fire control/illumination and guidance radar. Like the S-300PMU-1, 12 TELs can be controlled, with any mix of 5P85SE2 self-propelled and 5P85TE2 trailer launchers. Optionally it can make use of the 96L6E all altitude detection radar and 76N6 low altitude detection radar.

Sagarika Missile



Development of the K-15 missile started in the late 1990s with the goal of building a submarine-launched ballistic missile for use with the Indian Navy nuclear-powered Arihant class submarines.Sagarika has a length of 10 metres (33 ft), diameter of 0.74 metres (2 ft 5 in), weighs 17 tonnes and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kilograms (2,205 lb) over 700 kilometres (435 mi). It was developed at the DRDO’s missile complex in Hyderabad
The missile was successfully test fired seven times, and tested to its full range up to four times. The tests of February 26, 2008 was conducted from a submerged pontoon 50 metres (160 ft) beneath the surface off the coast of Visakhapatnam.

Kashtan CIWS



The weapon is a modular system comprising a command module and typically 2 combat modules, although the number can be as many as 8 in the case of Admiral Kuznetsov or the Indian Vikramaditya. The command module detects and tracks threats, distributes targeting data to the combat modules, and interrogates IFF of approaching threats. The command module has a 3-D target detection radar, and an all weather multi-band integrated control system. Depending on the number of installed combat modules, the system can engage multiple targets simultaneously.

The combat modules automatically track using either radar, electro-optronic control system (such as FLIRs) or both, and then engages targets with missiles and guns. The combat modules are typically equipped with two GSh-30k (AO-18K) six-barrelled 30 mm gatling guns, fed by a link-less feeding mechanism, and two 9M311 launchers equipped with 4 ready-to-fire missiles each and fed by a reloading system storing 32 missiles in ready-to-launch containers.
The guns used in the Kashtan are the GSh-30k six-barrelled 30 mm gatling gun. Individually, each GSh-30k has a higher rate of fire compared to other guns used by other CIWS such as the GAU-8 on the Goalkeeper and the M61 Vulcan on the Phalanx. Along with a high rate of fire, the fairly heavy round (390 g or 14 oz) used by the Kashtan is comparable to the DU round of the GAU-8 Avenger (425 g or 15.0 oz), although the muzzle velocity (and therefore both the kinetic impact and effective range) is slightly lower, partially offsetting the high caliber and rate of fire.
The missiles used in the Kashtan are the 9M311 missiles, which is also used on the 9K22 Tunguska. The 9M311 is a SACLOS guided missile, however, it is steered automatically by the command module. The warhead weighs 9 kilograms (20 lb) and is either laser or radio fuzed. The warhead is a continuous-rod warhead with a steel cube fragmentation layer. The detonation of the warhead will form a complete circle of fragmentation that is 5 meters in radius, and damage or destroy anything in that circle.

Dhanush Missile




Prithvi III class (codenamed Dhanush meaning Bow) is a two-stage ship-to-surface missile. The first stage is solid fuelled with a 16 metric ton force (157 kN) thrust motor. The second stage is liquid fuelled. The missile can carry a 1,000 kg warhead to a distance of 350 km and a 500 kg warhead to a distance of 600 kilometres and a 250 kilogram warhead up to a distance of 750 kilometres. Dhanush is a system consisting of a stabilization platform (Bow) and the Missile (Arrow). Supposedly it is a customised version of the Prithvi and that the additional customizations in missile configuration is to certify it for sea worthiness. Dhanush has to be launched from a hydraulically stabilized launch pad. Its low range acts against it and thus it is seen a weapons either to be used to destroy an aircraft carrier or an enemy port.

Gabriel Missile




Developed in the early 1990s is related to the Gabriel Mk III but larger and more massive with a turbojet engine for sustained flight. Brahmos is the world's fastest cruise missile in operation.The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0.The land launched and ship launched versions are already in service with air launched and submarine launched versions currently under testing phase. An Air launched variant of Brahmos is planned which is expected to come out in 2012 and will make India the only country with supersonic cruise missiles in their army, navy, and air force.A hypersonic version of the missile is also presently under development with speed of Mach 7 to boost aerial fast strike capability. It is expected to be ready for testing by 2017.
